Porting all those functions to a new platform would take years and result in a huge program. It also has to have compatibility with the obsolete features and design decisions in the last 30 years of versions of Word, some of which were right at the time but strange given today's capabilities. Well, its results may be basic but it's huge and complicated and has thousands of functions, many of which are used by only a tiny proportion of users. I can't solve your problem, but I can give a little historical and cultural perspective. Once you open the document on a computer with the installed software (as opposed to the Office 365 web app), the equations are preserved, and are once again visible and editable. If your document has equations, opening it in Office Mobile will render MathType equations with a red X, and will remove OMML equations entirely - from the iPad view. It's called Office Mobile, and requires an Office 365 subscription. Second, MS does have a version of Word for iPad.

If you use the OMML equation editor (i.e., the 'new' one) in Word, the equations don't even appear in the Pages document.

If you use MathType in Word, and open the document in Pages, the equations are visible but not editable. There is no compatibility between Word & Pages when it comes to equations.
